That of the “Pauperes commilitones Christi templique Salomonis” (Poor Fellow-in-arms of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon), better known as the Knights Templar or simply Templars, was one of the first [1] and the best known medieval Christian religious orders of chivalry.
The birth of the Order in the Holy Land lies at the center of the wars between Christian and Muslim forces broke out after the First Crusade launched in 1096. At that time, the streets of the Holy Land were traveled by pilgrims from all over Europe, who were often attacked and looted. To defend the holy places and pilgrims were born different religious orders. Around 1118-1119 a handful of riders decided to found the original nucleus of the Templar Order, giving himself the task of ensuring the safety of a number of European pilgrims who continued to visit Jerusalem. The Order was made official in 1129, assuming a monastic rule, with the support of Bernard of Clairvaux. The dual role of monks and soldiers, which marked the Templar Order in the years of his maturity, was always a source of concern in a Christian context.
