Anubis (also Anubis, from the Greek Ἄνουβις) is an Egyptian deity belonging to the religion of ancient Egypt. He was the god of mummification and cemeteries, protector of necropolises and the world of the dead (one of his epithets was “Lord of the Westerners”), and was represented as a man with the head of a jackal.
In the constant evolution of the Egyptian pantheon, Anubis assumed different functions in various contexts. Adored during the 1st Egyptian dynasty (ca. 3100 BC – 2890 BC), as the protector of tombs, he ended up also assuming the functions of embalmer, inventor of mummification. During the Middle Kingdom (ca. 2055 BC – 1650 BC) he was replaced by Osiris as lord of the afterlife. One of his main tasks was to accompany the souls of the deceased to the underworld, to then carry out the weighing of the heart which was decisive for the admission of the souls into the realm of the dead. Despite being one of the oldest, represented and mentioned Egyptian deities, Anubis played almost no role in the mythological tales of ancient Egypt. He was also the patron god of the 17th nome of Upper Egypt, whose capital, Khasa, was renamed Cinopoli (“City of Dogs”) in the Hellenistic period, due to the cult that was celebrated there.
