In all ancient cultures, everywhere in the world, as the end of the year approaches or in some peculiar moments of our life, the “payment to the Earth” ceremony is fulfilled. Ritual consists in a donation to Mother Earth, mother of the cosmos and all that is in it, first of all to propitiate the upcoming new year but even during the year in order to get our desires fulfilled. Ancient Celts used to pay homage to the Earth by gifting it: this is a very common practice widespread all over the world with slight differences. In African tradition and by consequence in the Afro American one, the ritual is called Ebò Ikuò and is addressed to Onilé, Orixà of the Earth in itself, or to Nanà Burukù. In the culture of the Andes ritual is addressed to Pachamama, Mother Earth. Main theme of this thousand-years-old practices, which in a sense can leave us astonished, is that these “payment to the Earth” rituals are very similar one to another, as if they were revealed, in past historic, to humans by the same divinities.

– propitiate the coming of the new year, pushing poverty, unhappiness, loneliness away and welcoming instead friendship, richness, love and peace
– propitiate resolution of health, money, love or family troubles
