Beautiful statue depicting the Egyptian god Osiris. Osiris (also Osiris, in ancient Greek: Ὄσιρις, hellenization of the original Egyptian Asar or Asir) is an Egyptian deity belonging to the religion of ancient Egypt, a member of the Ennead and mythical king of ancient Egypt. Inventor of agriculture and religion, he was reputed to have reigned as a civilizer and benefactor of mankind. In one of the numerous versions of his myth, Osiris would have drowned in the Nile, assassinated during a conspiracy organized by his younger brother Seth. Despite the dismemberment of the body, he would have returned to life thanks to the magical practices of the sisters Isis and Nefti. The martyrdom of Osiris would have earned him lordship over the world of the dead, of which he would have become sovereign and supreme judge, guarantor of the laws of Maat – he was therefore revered as the god of death and the underworld.
