The Necronomicon is a treatise by Ars Goetia, the dark counterpart of Theurgy, which teaches how to get in touch with ancient disembodied entities that once, before the fall, reigned sovereign on this Earth. Those whom H. P. Lovecraft calls “Great Ancients” in his stories.
According to what he narrated, this arcane work was written in Damascus in the eighth century AD by a Yemeni necromancer, and originally it would have been called Al Azif, which means: The howling of the Jinn. According to Arab mythology, the Jinns were entities that descended from the skies in the antediluvian era, those who in the Jewish tradition are called Nephilim, the gods who were precipitated into the underworld of their rebellion.
Having learned of these legends, Lovecraft decided to use them to write stories, in which ancient knowledge merged with his imagination. In fact, what Lovecraft called Necronomicon, was the secret Book of the Nephilim …
