The Orixà in charge of divination is Ifà. Ifà is a very powerful and mysterious saint, often associated to Saint Francis: he represents the mouth of God and speaks through divinatory seashells (buzios). Legend told us that Xangò was the first owner of these seashells but had no interest in them, because of his young age, so he gave them to Ifà and had the gift of dance in return. Ifà is believed to have 4 eyes, two are closed during the day, the other two during the night, people cannot understand when he speaks so he has a personal translator, the incomparable BaráExú. Seashells are the most popular divinatory tool in Africa, Ifà tables is made of sixteen buzios; consultation is called dilogùn. Seashells are thrown on air and depending on how they fall (upside down, the position they have etc) an answer is given: 256 combinations of answers are possible. Ifà is foolproof but not everyone can access its mystery. The oracle has an answer for anything is asked: love, money, good luck, health, evil eye. This divinatory practice is very complicated and secret: anyway there is also a practice which uses just four seashells, very popular in Brazil, that allows almost anybody to use this ancient Divinatory Oracle.
