Its history goes back to a real character, a traveling monaco and hermit budaishi Chinese that is said to be the incarnation of Bodhisattva Miroku (Maitreya in Sanskrit).
In its different representations of the golden Buddha prosperity he is always smiling and shows symbols of abundance among which the famous gold bar, as well as food, drink, treasures … .. The name “Hotei” literally means “cloth bag “where presumably he preserves its riches.
