The campas are in-ground burials topped with a gravestone or tomb slab. To speak of Exu Sete Campas is to venture into one of the darkest, most solemn, and most fascinating corners of Quimbanda and the broader Afro-Brazilian esoteric landscape. Unlike many other entities of the spiritual pantheon who display a more exuberant, dynamic, or even festive nature, Sete Campas is a figure that commands immediate, almost chilling respect. His very name unreservedly reveals his sphere of influence: the word campa denotes the grave, the burial pit, the stone slab that seals the final resting place of the earthly body.

His cosmological standing places him as a dominant force operating within the Povo da Calunga Pequeña—the people of the cemetery—moving under the direct aegis and authority of monumental figures such as Exu Caveira and Omulu-Obaluaiê. That number seven prefixed to his name is no mere label; it evokes absolute mastery over the seven levels of burial, the seven gates of the realm of the dead, and all the directions through which the energy of ending and decay propagates.

From the perspective of his persona and ritual function, practitioners describe Sete Campas as the great guardian of silence and inviolable secrets. He is the entity invoked when there is a need to “draw a curtain” over something—whether to permanently break a negative influence, bury a curse, or sever ties with toxic situations that must rot and dissolve forever. He functions as a stern psychopomp, guiding the spiritual transition so that the soul does not remain bound to the material realm or seized by parasitic entities, ensuring that what belongs to the earth returns to the earth.

In his manifestations and offerings, he favors an almost ancient solemnity. Black and deep red suit him well, occasionally tinged with the purple of mourning. Elements such as graveyard dirt, wrought iron, dark candles, strong cachaça, and full-bodied cigars form part of his symbolic language. To invoke or work with Exu Sete Campas means engaging in direct dialogue with stasis, irreversible transformation, and the mystery of the Beyond; for this reason, within the tradition of Quimbanda, he is never considered an Exu to be toyed with, but rather a formidable ally demanding utter seriousness, clarity, and deep reverence for the laws of the final end.

The Exùs and Pomba Giras are entities venerated within Quimbanda. Despite their stylized or stylized-mannerist artistic depictions, they are not to be confused with the demons of Goetia nor with the devils of Judeo-Christian tradition. Each statue represents a specific Quimbanda entity (Exù or Pomba Gira) complete with its attributes and stylized form. Certain images display ornate, baroque workmanship, distinguished by meticulous detail and delicate features. These statues of Exù and Pomba Gira are used to adorn Quimbanda altars or to accompany the spiritual assentamentos of the initiates and faithful of this ancient tradition.
