Shiva The term comes from Sanskrit and means fire, light and is one of the most important deities of the Hindu tradition. The power of Shiva is expressed in energy as opposed to the masculine and feminine receptive of his Shakti (goddess). Lingam means column or tower. Shivalingam therefore means fire tower and is a potent symbol of light and surrounded by wreaths of fire across the earth and sky emitting light and warmth of all those who approach him. The form also summarizes the creative power not yet demonstrated that arises from the union of the polarities of masculine and the feminine. The elongated shape represents the masculine polarity, while the red veins (yoni) than women.
