“In the in the mid summer day, reality and dream merge into each other” (W.Shakespeare). Summer solstice put the world of visible and invisible in communication, two worlds that melt together and everything is made possible. This celebration replaces ancient summer solstice ceremonies and for centuries it had been used in different demonstrations bounded to popular beliefs, like Saint John’s Fires and other propitiatory rituals typical of beginning of the season celebrations. A very popular habit in this occasion is the gathering of herbs that during Saint John Baptis’s night’s Eve, between June 23rd and June 24th, multiply their therapeutic and magic characteristics. Summer solstice (that is the moment in which sun reaches the highest position and then start decreasing, between June 21st and 22nd and start rise again during winter solstice) is seen as a very peculiar and magical moment, it is the beginning of a new season and in magic is associated to Saint John’s celebrations on June 24th, although it starts charging energy of the earth already during the night of the 20th.

We should go back to Celtic mythology to find the origin of this magical celebration. Celts called the ritual of making big bonfires with logs “Halban Hermin” which lasted all night long and was resumed by the Germans and other northern Europe populations. It is common knowledge that these bonfires would help preserving sunlight also during dark hours, to reach the legendary “day of three days”. In any case, it was a plain cult of the sun which celebrated strength and power of this star on darkness
This wonderful ritual is the perfect occasion to celebrate ancient positive strengths of nature and to traditionally benefit from a several benefits: deleting any kind of evil spell or negative energy, breaking the chain of bad luck, propitiating success either in economic matters or love affairs. The ritual has to be carried out during the night before Saint Johns’ celebration or in the immediate days before it. Celebration of the maximum brightness of the sun, energies that are released during Saint John’s night are full of strength and light. At the same time, fire pours positive protective strengths out left into the wood and the nocturne air by the sun which is charged of strong defensive vibrations against evil darkness.
